How Is Your Next Period Estimated?
To understand your predictions, it helps to look at the three primary factors this calculator uses to map your timeline:
Cycle Length: This is the total number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of your next period.
Period Duration: The number of consecutive days you experience menstrual bleeding each month.
Estimated Date Calculation: The calculator takes the first day of your last period and adds your average cycle length to estimate the exact day your next menstruation should begin.
Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle Phases
Your menstrual cycle is much more than just your period. It consists of four distinct phases driven by hormonal shifts:
1. Menstrual Phase
This phase begins on the first day of your period when the uterus sheds its lining because pregnancy did not occur. It typically lasts between 3 to 7 days.
2. Follicular Phase
Overlapping with your period, this phase starts on day one of your cycle and lasts until ovulation. During this time, your body releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to prepare eggs for release while building up a fresh uterine lining.
3. Ovulation Phase
Occurring roughly midway through your cycle, ovulation is the brief 24-hour window when a mature egg is released from the ovary. This phase marks your peak fertility time during the month.
4. Luteal Phase
After ovulation, your body prepares for a potential pregnancy by increasing progesterone levels. If the egg is not fertilized, hormone levels drop, leading to common premenstrual symptoms (PMS) and eventually triggering your next period.
